Text Box: With an average lifespan of 75 years, one tree will store 1/2 ton (1,000 pounds) of carbon over the course of it’s lifetime.
Text Box: The average American produces 26 tons of carbon over their lifetime per year.
Text Box: One tree stores 13 pounds of carbon each year of it’s life.
Text Box: Why Should You Care About CO2?

Carbon dioxide and other pollutants from motor exhaust are linked to air pollution and are believed to be a contributing factor in negative climate changes.  When fossil fuels are burned, carbon that has been locked away for millions of years is released into the air.  It is essential that each of us reduce our CO2 emissions.  While it is not possible to eliminate all CO2 emissions immediately, we can help reduce the impacts of those emissions that are unavoidable by planting trees.
Text Box: How Can Trees Help The Problem?

Because trees take in carbon dioxide, split it apart, emit oxygen and hold carbon in their tissues and deposit it underground, they are an excellent way to reduce excess carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.  Urban trees also shade homes and help lower electricity costs and reduce the usage of fossil fuels.  In addition, urban trees reduce many forms of pollution (i.e. noise, smoke, odor) as well as reducing urban storm water runoff.  Trees reduce storm water runoff by intercepting the raindrops, encouraging evaporation, and by absorption through their roots.
Text Box: One tree can prevent 3,000 gallons of storm water runoff per year.
Text Box: That same tree can prevent 1/4 million (250,000 gallons) of storm water runoff over the life of the tree.
Text Box: What Human Activities Create Carbon Dioxide Emissions?

With the majority of people still sourcing our power using fossil fuels, the scope of our activities that generate carbon dioxide is massive, for example:

· Driving your car
· Heating and cooling your house
· Switching on a light
· Watching TV

Most human activity generates carbon dioxide—even breathing.  While we can’t stop or reduce that, there are other ways we can start lessening our carbon footprint.
Text Box: How Can I Become Part of the Solution?

Cottonwood SWCD has launched a program to help mitigate carbon right here in Cottonwood County.  A $50.00 contribution by you will be matched by a city within Cottonwood County with $50.00 to plant a potted 6 foot urban forest shade tree.  If you contribute $50.00 or more, you will receive a certificate of appreciation stating the amount of carbon mitigated from the Cottonwood SWCD.  All trees planted within the city limits will be protected under urban forest ordinances to insure a long life.  By taking part in this special program you can help reduce your carbon footprint for years to come!
